Sankranti Pongal 2016 Special Buses

HYDERABAD: The special buses of APSRTC which will ply for Sankranthi festival, will start from LB Nagar instead of Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS). The buses heading towards Vijayawada, or which pass through Vijayawada will start from LB Nagar. The point of origin for regular services remains to be MGBS.

Approximately 40,000 people are expected to travel during the festival season, and the number might reach one lakh on January 13.

To clear the rush from twin cities, the RTC would ply a total of 2,698 special buses from January 8 to 14.

Expecting some people would not book tickets in advance and choose to buy tickets during the time of travel, the RTC planned to keep around 400 buses on standby mode on January 12 and 13. The special, and extra buses are in addition to regular services. On any day, around 486 regular buses head from the city to AP.

APSRTC VC and MD N Sambasiva Rao said that this year, executive directors and other senior officials would be given charge of 23 boarding points in and around the city, such as BHEL, LB Nagar and KPHB. They would ensure hassle-free travel in the buses.

Out of the 2,698 special buses, about 1,200 are allotted for reservation category. “People can book tickets under Online Passenger Service (OPS), or with advance ticketing booking agents,” Sambasiva Rao said at a press conference here on Thursday.

Financial performance of APSRTC: APSRTC officials are thinking on how to use 1995 acres of urban and semi-urban land in 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh, to recover from debts and put an end to losses incurred by the corporation. They are taking help of consultants to know if other business like cargo or other corporation can reap desired profits.

In the three-quarters this financial year, the RTC incurred a loss of `336 crores, while it was `490 crore in the corresponding period in the 2014-15 financial year.

‘’Because of our internal efficiency, we were able to bring down losses by around ` 160 crores. As salaries have been increased, we incurred a burden of `48 crore. But we were able to save `20 crore because of fall in diesel prices, and earned `25 crore by fare hike,” Sambasiva Rao said. He added that they sought 215 acres of land in Amaravati and nine high-end terminals  would be constructed in nine theme cities at the new capital.
